The 21-year-old has shone at Forest this season after being cleared from Middlesbrough on loan in the summer.

Speaking about the move, Boro boss Neil Warnock explained his reasons.

“I let him go. He really needed to sort himself out,” he told talkSPORT. “I basically told him you can go to the top or you can go out of the league.

“I think Steve Cooper is the manager for him, to be honest. He let him go more often, which suits his game.”

Fans reacted to Warnock’s claims, as well as a line from NottinghamshireLive’s Sarah Clapson that Boro is eyeing Spence with envy this season.

KelvinFahrenheit : Why would Boro be envious? He is still ours, we will sell him at the end of the season and we are happier with Jones. We could have called him back in January just to keep him from playing for one of our playoff rivals, but we had the good grace not to.

UTBhorso : No one in Boro “looks with envious eyes”. Jones in great form for Boro in Spence’s position. All good deals for Boro and one place he won’t be next season is Forest I’m afraid!

red pete : We got the form this season and boro get an inflated price. The win-win situation

Alwaysred62 : I just don’t believe those two previous remarks because I think Spence offers a lot more? But it could also be that he is in a much better team at Forest!!!! End of

Karen Price : Neil Warnock did Spence a huge favor by saying he needs to prove himself. So many kudos to Warnock and a huge kudos to Forest for letting him speak. The kid has flourished at our club, I wish I could keep him, we have a big fight with all the other clubs who want him and it’s cu-ching for Middlesbrough.

BoroFan : Word for the Forest fans, we didn’t watch with envy as we have Jones, who is 3-4 times better.

geoff24237 : Middlesbrough fans watched with envy as Spence’s career took off at the City Ground? No, we didn’t! We don’t care what Spence does because he wouldn’t fit in the team rather than Jones.

Robmacmy : [Replying to geoff24237]: How ridiculous. You should care. The boy will make a lot of money for your club. You just speak with the bias of a Boro fan. You haven’t regularly followed Djed’s progress at Forest, and neither have we re Jones at Boro.
