Football fans have exchanged a war of words in a heated debate on social media over who was better at his peak among Yaya Toure and Patrick Vieira.
The Ivorian won three Premier League titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup during his eight years at the Etihad.
Toure’s fine form also continued at international level with the Ivory Coast as he was named African Footballer of the Year for four consecutive years.
The 44-year-old Frenchman enjoyed a prolific career and captained Arsenal during their remarkable 2003-04 ‘Invincibles’ season.
Vieira won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups before leaving Arsenal in 2005 for Juventus.
Sky Sports has tweeted out a poll asking fans who was the best in their prime between the former City Toure star and Arsenal hero Vieira.
With 34,000 votes cast at the time of this writing, Vieira got the lion’s share of votes with 64.2%.
Toure may only have 35.8% of the vote, but that doesn’t mean fans aren’t deeply divided in the debate.
“LOL, Vieira is not fit to tie Yaya’s shoes,” a fan posted.
While another argued: “Yaya was simply the best. Vieira doesn’t even come close.”
A third tweeted: “Yaya Touré [is] clear from Viera, nostalgia blinds people here. Yaya Touré had one of the best midfield seasons we have ever seen in the Prem.”
Someone else added: ‘Yaya Touré was an absolute beast [sic] how can it be compared to Vieira FFS.”
And a fifth fan wrote: “How can anyone even put Yaya Touré in the same breath [sic] like Viera, he [is] not even close. Viera won at the highest level for club and country.”
