If you ride around Wrigleyville keep an eye out for a man on a scooter.

Because you might end up striking up a conversation with Cubs starter Jake Arrieta.

Arrieta is back on the north side after three seasons in Philadelphia. Chicago is a familiar place for him, pitching for the Cubs from 2013 to 2017, but the 35-year-old has spent the last two days riding his electric scooter around town, getting to know familiar places while meeting Cubs fans. .

It’s something Arrieta said he embraced during his first term with the Cubs and still does.

“I like going out on the town and seeing the people, having conversations,” the right-hander said on Saturday after making his debut in the season. “The fans here are some of the best in the world.”

Arrieta, who lives near Wrigley Field, said he rode his scooter to the stadium and liked to spark conversations with passers-by when seated at a stop sign or traffic light.

“It’s one of the things I remember the most is going through people, [having a] brief conversation, ”he said. “The appreciation is very special for myself and for everyone here. I think more [players] kiss it, the better off we are.

“I can’t wait to do more scooter rides and meet more people.”

Arrieta acknowledged that it was more difficult to engage with Chicagoans due to COVID-19, but reiterated the importance of players interacting with fans.

“It’s something I’m very proud of, and I love little electric scooters,” he added, “so it’s something you’ll see me most of the summer.”
