With a legendary franchise like the Dallas Cowboys, there’s always going to be a debate over who’s the highest ranked players in the team’s history.
Also, it’s early March and Cowboys fans are bored. Pending decisions regarding wide receivers Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup are buzzing, but it’s the dead end of the year, from the NFL’s perspective. For better or for worse, it creates space for discussion.
Enter @6Blackhawks and the rest of “Cowboys Twitter”. The Dallas fan went viral recently after he said current Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and former QB Tony Romo are the best in franchise history.
Predictably, the reaction from Cowboys fans was strong. Really, the conversation revolves around four names in total, with Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman joining the conversation.
All four quarterbacks have their own traits that make them worth considering, which has only added to the discussion that has erupted since the Tweet started going viral.

Cowboys fans get in on it
Throwing shade at Aikman and Staubach and their combined five Super Bowl rings angered many fans, with many who responded saying the modern generation of fans must not have done their homework.
“Not even close” @franke224 tweeted. “This cowboy fan generation has become embarrassing to anyone who tunes into fanboys. We have teenagers calling legends mediocre and mediocre players calling legends and goats. Just because Madden gave them a 90 rating, they think they’re Hall of Fame.
@AlvinMattH1 echoed that same sentiment, calling Prescott and Romo “strangled artists” compared to Aikman and Staubach.
“You meant Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman the ones with the rings that don’t count choke artists,” the Cowboys fan replied.
Of course, many fans agreed with the initial Tweet. @pakalak25 mentioned that Aikman had legendary running back Emmitt Smith in mind.
“I love Aikman, but we have to at least take into account that he had one of, if not the greatest RB ever. I’d like to look at what Romo or Dak could do with a 1500 RB yards for 5 consecutive seasons.
@1RudyGonzalez thinks it’s too difficult to rank them outright, saying instead that Prescott and Romo only have the advantage in numbers.
“Amazing stat wise for both,” he replied. “But as far as champions go, both couldn’t do it.”
Romo, Staubach and Aikman stand out
There were also fans who mentioned Don Meredith and Danny White, who certainly deserve to be part of the conversation. While Prescott is in the middle of his career and can boast two Pro Bowls and an Offensive Rookie of the Year award, Aikman, Staubach and Romo have tangible accomplishments above him.
For Aikman, his numbers have never been impressive but the three rings speak for themselves. He was the starting quarterback for 12 seasons for a reason, and it was due to his reputation as a “player” and winning.
Romo owns franchise records for passing yards (34,183) and touchdowns (248), although he never got over the championship bump.
Finally, Staubach can boast two rings with a Super Bowl MVP. Statistically, Staubach also has the best winning percentage in the discussion, going 85-29 in his NFL career.
