Walk Unafraid

Song available on Up.

as the sun comes up, as the moon goes down
these heavy notions creep around
it makes me think
long ago I was brought into
this life a little lamb
a little lamb
courageous, stumbling
fearless was my middle name.
but somewhere there I
lost my way
everyone walks the same
expecting me to step
the narrow path they've laid
they claim to
walk unafraid
I'll be clumsy instead
hold my love me or leave me
high.

say "keep within the boundaries if you want to play."
say "contradiction only makes it harder."
how can I be
what I want to be?
when all I want to do is strip away
these stilled constraints
and crush this charade
shred this sad masquerade
I don't need no persuading
I'll trip, fall, pick myself up and
walk unafraid
I'll be clumsy instead
hold my love me or leave me
high.

if I have a bag of rocks to carry as I go
I just want to hold my head up high
I don't care what I have to step over
I'm prepared to look you in the eye
look me in the eye
and if you see familiarity
then celebrate the contradiction
help me when I fall to
walk unafraid
I'll be clumsy instead
hold my love me or leave me
high.
walk unafraid
I'll be clumsy instead
hold my love me or leave me
high.

I'm surprised no one has written about this song yet!!

Anyway, this is the track that led me to become obsessed with R.E.M. I had just gotten Up (my first R.E.M. album) and stopped dead in my tracks when I came to it. I must have played it over a hundred times that night...

By Cira I love this song. It's my favourite song on the album.

By rachel This is, for sure, my second favorite track in Up, coming right after "suspicion", I love the way Michael's voice sounds on it, and the lyrics are wonderful!!

By Karen I think that this song is originally, like IMITATION OF LIFE. I also think that Michael Stipe is a poet, and this song is GREAT. Thank you R.E.M.!!!!!!

By Alessandra cried like a wee lass the first time i heard it. the words spoke directly to my heart. like someone was interpreting my life in song. gives me hope......

By dawn I never thought this song was that great but then I saw it live. And even though at first I was thinking "bugger" I soon got into it. Later I dug out up to see if it was really that good. Even though I dident think it was I listened again, and again, and I still am, it's weird but this song is REALLY growing on me and now I think it's great.

By John This song is so powerful! Every time I listen to it i just have to smile. It simply makes you happy and feel strong. Has anybody heard the intro to this song which they played in Cologne (i don't know, maybe they have played it at other places, too)? I love that, it's so emotional.
greetings

By Tim Dear REM fans,
It's the first time I've writing as a fan of anything but this really is a very special and truthful song. It's also a special day because I've secured tickets for the next REM concert in Lisbon, Portugal (7th January,2005). I don't know when the other comments we're posted but, Alessandra if you're out there I couldn't agree more with you... Michael Stipe is a true poet of our times.

Season's greatings, Ruben.

By Hil I can play the whole album on bass guitar, but this song is my fave song to play from the album! It has such a strong bassline and it's just amazing!
