Radio Free Europe

Song available on Murmur.

Beside yourself if radio's gonna stay.
Reason: it could polish up the grey.
Put that, put that, put that up your wall
That this isn't country at all

Raving station, beside yourself

Keep me out of country in the word
Deal the porch is leading us absurd.
Push that, push that, push that to the hull
That this isn't nothing at all.

Straight off the boat, where to go?
Calling on in transit, calling on in transit
Radio Free Europe, radio...

Beside defying media too fast
Instead of pushing palaces to fall
Put that, put that, put that before all
That this isn't fortunate at all

Raving station, beside yourself
Calling on in transit, calling on in transit
Radio Free Europe, radio...

Decide yourself, calling all of the medias too fast

Keep me out of country in the word
Disappoint is into us absurd

Straight off the boat, where to go?
Calling on in transit, calling on in transit
Radio Free Europe

Our goals were a little different, I guess. One great single - that's what we wanted. No one expected a hit. You've got to remember that the idea that you could do that for more that like a year was just unheard of. I guess everyone had seen The Beatles and the Stones and stuff, but down here it was... ideally, we were thinking, well, we could play once a month in town, make a couple of hundred bucks. And maybe every couple of years or so, we'd put out an EP or a single. For a lot of the bands that I've followed from the punk era since, it wasn't a career. It was something they did. And they didn't have videos and makeup artist and stuff. So we figured, if we got really lucky and we;re good at this, then we can play. And maybe in the next five or six years, we could put out an album and a couple of singles and an EP.

It was supposed to be a demo tape, so we could get jobs. And we met this guy who said he'd put it out. It wasn't very good mastering; we are all young, and we didn't know what the hell we were doing. We sent one to Womens Wear Daily - I swear to God. Then we started getting letters from people at record companies.

There is always a discussion about the first word of this song.
Do you think it's Decide or Beside??

By george e 'Decide' makes much more sense than 'Beside', in my opinion.

By Doug It's decide.

By Shane My first favorite REM song. I spent hours listening and re-listening so I could get the lyrics written down ( I was highly disappointed that the album did not have extensive liner notes. Ah, well...)
Listening to it the first time, I resolved that when I heard it next I would record it off the radio, and then buy the album at the first paycheck of convenience. Which I did...two and a hlf years later (money was tight).
This song will never let me forget everything that was happening in my life at he time, and I will never let this song go.
In my REM list of faves, this song is only surpassed by "Life and How To Live It".

By TROY-DAVID it's clearly a "d" sound at the beginning of this song. it's "decide."
