Hey, Andy did you hear about this one? Tell me, are you locked in the punch?
Hey Andy are you goofing on Elvis? Hey, baby. Are we losing touch?

It's a funny little song about two people who are dead but are supposed to be alive: Elvis, and Andy Kaufman, a comic who tested the boundaries. One of his routines was to read from The Great Gatsby for 45 minutes while the audience threw things at him. A lot of people think he's still alive. The line 'let's play Twister, let's play Risk' is a childhood thing. Twister I played once; you try and do it with pretty people of the opposite sex and you all end up tangled in a pile.
Peter Buck 1992
Andy Kaufman died of a heart attack; I think he was about 36. He did a show in the Carbegie Hall once when he said, 'Ok, I'm taking everybody to the deli.' And he got everybody to file outside where, sure enough, there were eight big yellow buses waiting to take them out to dinner.
Mike Mills 1992
Michael's just got this funny take on faith and beliefs, trying to understand if what you're seeing is the real thing. It's a nice relief on the record, because the rest is pretty dark, or at least darker than we've been before.
Mike Mills 1993
That song was written and recorded on the day that it was delivered to the record company. Althouh it was kind of a 40-hour day.

MY FAVORITE SONG!!! EVER!!! END OF STORY. PLUS, IT REALLY BRINGS A TEAR TO YOUR EYES. OR IS IT A LAUGH TO YOUR THROAT? LETS JUST SAY BOTH!

I guess I am a late starter to REM However now I am one of the converted, personally I couldnt give a monkeys whether Michael Stype is gay or not he would be welcome in my home. Maybe he should be villified as a role model
I think it was -even in this day and age- an amzing thing to do to gop publiuc he didnt have to I would think that he is wealthy enough not to care. I am sitting on a damp cold England with awarm fire supposedly working with "Nightswimming" playing on my headphones. I have a warm coffee some toast and you know life doesnt get much better. Granted OK it could be a Carribean Island a beatiful woman and warm seas ... but frankly who cares this is is a good day. Thank you REM for settingthe mood.

My favourite song of all time- i mean it
The dream like atmosphere the music cunjures up, the bittersweet lyrics- both humourous and intense at the same time- which is a fitting tribute to a true legend in entertainment- and a genius in audience manipulation
Long live Andy Kaufman

hey havent anybody noticed that the line "if you believed they put a man on the moon" literaly refers to probably the greatest conspiracy in american history . what a great way to expose it to the whole world,in the song thats proobably known worldwide .personaly i dont believe they put a man on the moon and i never did. and doesnt it read in the second verse "if you believe there s nothing up their sleave" and not "up my slieve"? and does anybody know what "agit" is? this is one of the songs that along with "losing my religion" immidiately comes to mind when you think of rem.

A essential song to any pop collection. It was a good 1st track to have in their Best of album.

Forever since I've heard this song, I think of my lost son Andy who was lost in a house fire in 1999. Always brings a tear to my eyes.

These lyrics are all off. "Tell me are you locked in the punch" is pure nonsense. The actual lyric is "Tell me are you liking the punch?" which is a reference to the Heaven's Gate cult, who drank poisoned punch in an effort to reach their eternal spots in Heaven. The significance of this lyric is that the HG cult members blindly accepted every word their cult leader told them as truths, which is obviously not a good idea. The song implies that the moon landing, Andy Kaufman's career, and other things should not be blindly accepted, but questioned instead. In other words, when someone tells you something (like the gov't tells you that we landed on the moon, or Andy Kaufman says women are inferior to men), you should question its integrity instead of taking it as fact merely because that's what someone told you.
My overall point is that if you want the real lyrics, and not a horribly shabby rendering as you see above, you should go to another site, like AZlyrics.com.
The entire point of the song is lost w/o the actual lyrics.

Sorry, you're going to have to look elsewhere for the lyrics. AZlyrics.com has the same mistake.

I keep listening over and over and it does sound like "locked in the punch." I guess I should have listened to the song again before posting, but my interpretation is one that I'd had for awhile, and it fits, but I'm not sure what the lyrics are anymore. If anyone knows for sure, and ideally the significance of "locked in the punch," please post it.
By brent
First of all, the Heaven's Gate cult committed suicide in 1997 and this song came out in 1992. :) So yeah, that's a bit off. If he was referring to anything at all in that vein it would probably be the Jim Jones mass suicide in 1978.
But no, pretty sure it's "locked in the punch."
Fabulous song!
