Half A World Away

Song available on Out Of Time.

This could be the saddest dusk
I've ever seen
Turn to a miracle
high alive
My mind is racing
As it always will
My hand is tired my heart aches
I'm half a world away here
my head sworn
To go it alone
And hold it along
Haul it along
And hold it
Go it alone
Hold it along and hold, hold.

This lonely deep sit hollow
I'm half a world
Half the world away
My shoes are gone
My life spent
I had too much to drink
I didn't think
and I didn't think of you
I guess that's all I needed
To go it alone
And hold it along
Haul it along
And hold it
Blackbirds backwards forwards and fall and hold hold.

Oh this lonely world is wasted
Pathetic eyes high alive
blind to the tide that turns the sea
This storm it came up strong
it shook the trees
And blew away our fear
I couldn't even hear

To go it alone
And hold it along
Haul it along
And hold it
To go it alone
And hold it along
Haul it along
To go it alone
And hold it along
Haul it along
And hold it
Blackbirds backwards forwards and fall and hold hold.

This could be the saddest dusk
I've ever seen
Turn to a miracle
high alive
My mind is racing
As it always will
My hands tired my heart aches
I'm half a world away and go.

This is about someone who thinks they're in love, but they're possibly not.
Michael Stipe

'Half A World Away' doesn't make sense to anybody but me. And even to me, it's a totally fabricated experience; it's drawn from things that I know or saw on TV or that people I know told me. It's a complete fabrication. But there's something there.
Michael Stipe 1992

What I get from this is the fact that no matter how much you tell yourself to be cool and sensible about things, you always find that your mind is racing. Or you go out and have too much to drink.

By Tim It's a desperate song - you think you've got it together ("my head sworn to go it alone") and then suddenly you find yourself thinking that "this lonely world is wasted." What makes this song great is both the music's and Stipe's vocal ability to reflect these changes.

By Tim After Country Feedback this is my favorite track on Out of Time. Try not to Breathe from AFtP reminded me of this track. Kind of like how E-Bow the Letter from New Adventures... reminded me of Country Feedback.

Anyway, the line "My hand is tired/my heart aches" could be about writing, yet I would like to believe it's about masturbation. To me it makes more sense.

By PBS i love this song. reminds me of me and my best friend in the world who i love the most marc. marc marc marc marc marc...yeah, obsessed, but whenm i began to lose hope, i went crazy and depressed and thought no. i rqan away...i am back now thoug, it's all in fun yeah!?! he is fit

By the awesomeness is upon us This could be the best song on the album... at the moment it's a draw between this one, Country Feedback, Near Wild Heaven & Losing My Religion. Hmm, tough choice! This one always gives me butterflies in my stomach whenever I hear it.
