Hey now, little speedyhead,
the read on the speedmeter says
you have to go to task in the city
where people drown and people serve.
Don't be shy. Your just deserve
is only just light years to go.
Me, my thoughts are flower strewn
ocean storm, bayberry moon.
I have got to leave to find my way.
Watch the road and memorize
this life that pass before my eyes.
Nothing is going my way.
The ocean is the river's goal,
a need to leave the water knows
We're closer now than light years to go.
I have got to find the river,
bergamot and vetiver
run through my head and fall away.
Leave the road and memorize
this life that pass before my eyes.
Nothing is going my way.
There's no one left to take the lead,
but I tell you and you can see
we're closer now than light years to go.
Pick up here and chase the ride.
The river empties to the tide.
Fall into the ocean.
The river to the ocean goes,
a fortune for the undertow.
None of this is going my way.
There is nothing left to throw
of Ginger, lemon, indigo,
coriander stem and rose of hay.
Strength and courage overrides
the privileged and weary eyes
of river poet search naivete.
Pick up here and chase the ride.
The river empties to the tide.
All of this is coming your way.
I asked everybody to sing a background part for the chorus without hearing any of the other guys. Mine was really emotional, and Bill's was totally the opposite, cool and low-key. They really worked together. That's the king of thing that keeps it from being too processed; that let's you know that it's not being machine to death, that there are human beings doing it.
Mike Mills 1992
'Find The River' to me has a lot of emotional baggage. It doesn't have that much to do with anything that would make sense to anyone else, but me, particulary. I know hte place I wrote it. I know the connections I had with it when I wrote it. I know connectrions that came afterwards, people that died. So yes, I can sing that song... but we've tried and tried to work it into some form which will translate live and for whatever reason we can't seem to play it. It's like a curse.
Michael Stipe 1995
I do love that song. Mike and I, when we wrote it, would drive around Miami in a convertable at three in the morning, and sing along to it. No words, just singing, both of us doing these climbing harmonics. It was so much fun to... cure yourself in that way.
Michael Stipe 1995
One more record this slow would probably kill us. I think we're all ready to work on faster, more driving songs.

A really emotional song that means a lot to me.I concider this one of the best REM-songs ever.
By Lone
So much emotion, so much feeling, even for a studio track you can just hear the emotion in Michael's voice. The best REM song most people have never heard.

I can't even start to comment on how much I absolutely love this song. The piano part is stunning. A totally obscure masterpiece!!

There's no point in trying to comment on this song, it's something special (lyrically and overall) it's simply out of this world even being the last track on an album that's not to be compared to anything it's central. It's one of those songs most people have never listened to really and when you find the beauty in it you'll feel you've discovered something which is your own...it's your soul, you have got to find the river
By Barni
Unquestionably the best song on the album. Stipe says he and Mike Mills would drive around Miami at 3 in the morning while they were writing it - you can imagine them doing just that. It's a supremely medicinal song, utterly relaxing and the lyrics and images it creates wash over you like a blanket.

The lyrics and melody resonate with me now just as much as it did back when I first heard the song (about ten years ago!). You listen to the song, let go and really dream.....

"all of this is coming your way"

Carolin is totally right,
It's lying on thick grass in a meadow looking up at a blue sky on a balmy summer's evening...transcendant!

When I'm having a bad day and I feel really depressed. I put this song on full blast on my DVD-Audio Player and I feel so much better after it. It makes you feel sorry for yourself but at the same time uplifts you.

I song of emotion and deep feeling and longing, people try to apply songs like this to their own lives I think, I've never really understood the words but the feelings expressed can be heard and felt by anyone.

before I will tell that R.E.M. are not from this world, but giv's us a beautifull part of his world.
And the song Find the River, are the prouve of his love to our Mankinds and the love to his music.
Extraordinary
